Discussion Chapters 4 & 5
Before you do a new post, check that last person's comments to respond/connect with and make sure questions are answered. What critical understanding have you gained from the reading? (Have your beliefs changed, been confirmed, added new ones?) Also check out the side page elements for announcements and information.

I try to also incorporate a lot of reading through out the school day. When I taught elementary, I read an accelerated reader book out loud to the students every day after lunch recess... usually about a chapter (or two depending on how long they are). After we have completed the book together, the entire class goes to the computer lab together and takes thet test. The books I chose are always age appropriate and I choose a variety of different genres. I encourage my students to always have an AR book at their desk that they can read if they finish their work early or we have extra time. They LOVE reading on the bean bags in the designated reading area.
I use word walls for everything. In the front of my classroom I have a word wall for Science, Social Studies, Math, and Reading vocabulary words. Each subject is color coded. Science is on blue word strips, social studies on green, math on pink, and reading on yellow. It is very accesible for the students to see and use if they need help spelling or need a refresher on what words we have already covered.
My spelling word wall is in the back of the classroom. Each week I put our weekly spelling words in the chart I have on the front white board. We use this chart through out the week for different activities. After they have tested on Friday, the words go on the back wall and remain there all week.
I have another bullitin board in the class room for math facts and another for different spanish words we learn!
I have picked up several new activities I want to try this year. One inparticular is the opposites activity where the students search magazines for different pictures to visually show vocab words and their opposites.

I also liked the Opposites activity and would like to try ir this year. I loved the Magic Square activity. I think my students would love it. I also find the list of characteristics listed on p.105 very helpful.
I hoping that this year I will be able to do what the author wrote in Chapter 5 p.106 paragraph 2, "I have written this book to support teachers who want to change the way they teach vocabulary, their goal being to help their students understand what they read and speak and write more fluently and eloquently. I realize that changing the way I teach vocabulary is risky, but I also realize that I need to change it for my students. I want to see them use the vocabulary I teach in their writing and reading.

Enlightening reflections on this book.....
Changing the way you teach IS RISKY and because it is for the STUDENTS, feel courage and strength to JUST DO IT.
